Directors of the time

The Director of realism often had the part of managing the actors on stage.  The director would usually be a senior actor in the troupe and he took on the responsibility for choosing the show, staging it, and managing the company.  Some well-known people that have taken on this role are Colley Cibber and David Garrick.

During this era lighting, set, music was starting to make its way into large scale productions.  The director would try to have an understanding of this technology and find the best way to use it for a show.  Because of all the new aspects of theatre were coming out at this time the need for a director became greater and greater.

The roll of the director is much like what a director for a show does today.  They give out blocking and make sure that the show looks like what they want the show to look like.  One of the main differences between modern directors and directors of the early 19th century was that realism directors were mainly actors and would often place themselves in their own show.
