Other Entertainment
In the Elizabethan Era Theatre was one of the most popular forms of entertainment because of William Shakespeare and other playwrights were making plays that separated themselves of England’s previous style of theatre. There were many other forms of entertainment in this Era besides theatre such as Music, Fine Arts, Hunting and sports.
Music during this time had two main styles, Madrigal and Ayra, folk songs were also popular during this time. Many important composers such as William Byrd, John Dowland, and Thomas Campion were alive during this time. During festivals there would be music performances, religious in nature, that would attract crowds almost as much as theatre performances.
There were many types of Elizabethan sports such as lance fighting. Lance fighting is when two warriors on horseback charge each other in armor and try to use their lance to knock the other off his horse. It was a very risky sport and it was not that uncommon for a warrior to die during a match. They also held archery competitions, sparing competitions; they had a sport very similar to bowling, along with what is called mob football. Mob football is similar to football in one way, getting the ball to a side before the other team gets the ball to the other side. There was no limit to the number of people playing and as long as no one got killed the game was allowed to be played.
Gambling was a large source of entertainment because it could be played by rich and poor men alike. The basis for our standard set of Playing cards first appeared in this era and gambling became a huge source of entertainment during this time. Some popular card games during this Era were Maw, One and Thirty, Bone ace, Ruff and Honors.
